  • You think that what you did in Original Sin eased the tension of Fury fans? Wrong! We're more pissed than ever that our favorite character has not only been replaced, but now turned into a senior citizen!

You’ll find that I’m not losing any sleep over it.

I haven’t read this story, but I’m guessing from context that the anonymous reader is unhappy that a guy who was an adult in World War II is now really old.

Which is understandable, but at the same time: Hey, people who want Spider-Man and other characters to age in real time. This is the other side of the coin.

Is anybody really concerned about ‘easing the tension of Fury fans’?  Look, bottom line: if you’re pissed off about Nick Fury being black now, it’s because you’re a racist.  And while the internet has made it sadly obvious that your racist asses are a pretty big (or at least very vocal) chunk of comics fandom, nobody gives a shit about placating your racist ass.  FUCK YOU.  I hope whatever you’re pissed off about makes you so upset that you die from it.

Not sure it’s quite that simple.

Marvel jumped through a *lot* of hoops to transform Marcus Johnson into Nick Fury junior.

It wasn’t (IMO) a great story and pretty much shoved Fury senior out of the way to make room for Coulson and Fury junior.

Doing that to a very long-running character is going to annoy fans, regardless of the replacement’s identity. Doing it in comics to bring ‘original’ continuity closer to a film is also going to annoy fans.

Other than having Ultimate Fury walk in and take over (which would have been rather stylish, and much simpler in many ways) there isn’t an easy route to replace a caucasian WW2 Fury with a never-before-mentioned African American modern version… unless you want to rewrite existing continuity, which Marvel is generally unwilling to do (Spider-weddings excepted).

In any case, now that they’ve done it, I’ve been enjoying the 'Fury junior’ stories. I hope that they hold their nerve once Samuel L. Jackson’s left the role… both Marvel and DC are prone to dump 'legacy characters’ and reintroduce the original a few years later. At least in DC’s case, that’s also been pretty bad for diversity.
